By the numbers, Starbucks has the stronger stock chart and sales momentum, while Chipotle has the better margins, the cleaner balance sheet and the cheaper multiple. $SBUX closed at $97.87 at the October 19, 2026 close, up 16.2% year to date. $CMG closed at $29.85, down 19.3% over the same stretch. That gap widened after Starbucks denied a reported interest in buying Chipotle, which pulled the takeover premium out of $CMG. The two report a day apart later this month, so the scoreboard below is about to get new inputs.
Background on the deal chatter lives in our Starbucks Chipotle deal report breakdown and our original note on the turnaround and takeover-report session. This piece is strictly about the two stocks.
The scoreboard: price performance
| Metric | $SBUX | $CMG |
|---|---|---|
| Close, Oct 19, 2026 | $97.87 | $29.85 |
| YTD (Dec 31, 2025 to Oct 19, 2026) | +16.2% | -19.3% |
| 1 year (Oct 20, 2025 to Oct 19, 2026) | +15.8% | -28.3% |
| 52-week high | $108.55 (Aug 13, 2026) | $42.36 (Oct 21, 2025) |
| 52-week low | $79.60 (Nov 4, 2025) | $28.18 (Jun 4, 2026) |
| Market cap at Oct 19 close | about $111.6 billion | about $37.8 billion |
For context, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF ($SPY) gained 12.4% over the same year-to-date window, so Starbucks is beating the market and Chipotle is badly lagging it. Market caps are our math: Oct 19 closes times shares outstanding from each company's latest 10-Q cover (1,140.0 million for Starbucks as of July 23, 2026; about 1,265.4 million for Chipotle as of July 24, 2026). Starbucks sits 9.8% below its 52-week high; Chipotle sits just 5.9% above its 52-week low.
Operations: momentum versus margins
Starbucks owns the growth headline. In its fiscal third quarter ended June 28, 2026, global comparable store sales rose 7.9%, with U.S. comps also up 7.9% on a 4.2% gain in transactions, per its 10-Q. Chipotle's June quarter was softer: comparable restaurant sales rose 2.2%, with transactions up just 1.0%. Its 10-Q also flagged "low-single-digit headwinds" to comparable sales trends.
Chipotle wins on profitability, and it is not close:
| Trailing four quarters | $SBUX | $CMG |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $38.33 billion | $12.42 billion |
| Operating margin | 9.4% | 15.2% |
| Net margin | 5.2% | 11.4% |
| Diluted EPS | $1.74 | $1.09 |
Figures sum the last four reported quarters from FMP data (Starbucks through June 28, 2026; Chipotle through June 30, 2026). Starbucks's latest quarter carried a one-time $536.3 million pre-tax gain from a divestiture, which flatters its trailing EPS. Restructuring charges cut the other way, at $302.6 million in that same quarter.
Valuation: who is cheaper?
On trailing GAAP earnings, $SBUX trades at about 56 times ($97.87 divided by $1.74) versus about 27 times for $CMG ($29.85 divided by $1.09). On forward estimates the gap narrows but persists. FMP's consensus has Starbucks earning $3.16 per share in fiscal 2027 (about 31 times) and Chipotle earning $1.37 in calendar 2027 (about 22 times). In short, the market pays a premium for Starbucks's turnaround and a discount for Chipotle's traffic worries.
Analysts lean bullish on both, by FMP's consensus price targets: $115.50 for Starbucks (range $97 to $130) and $41 for Chipotle (range $36 to $50). Recent rating actions on Chipotle have been mostly maintained ratings, though Baird downgraded it to Neutral from Outperform on August 24, 2026. Price targets are opinions, not forecasts we endorse.
Balance sheet and shareholder returns
This is where the two companies differ most. As of June 28, 2026, Starbucks reported $13.28 billion of debt, $3.61 billion of cash and short-term investments, and a shareholders' deficit of $7.67 billion. It pays a $0.62 quarterly dividend, a yield of about 2.5% on the October 19, 2026 close.
Chipotle carries no funded debt, with no borrowings under its $500 million credit facility at June 30, 2026, and positive shareholders' equity of $2.20 billion. (Its $5.42 billion of operating lease liabilities is the main obligation.) It pays no dividend and returns cash through buybacks instead: $1.33 billion repurchased in the first half of 2026 at an average of $34.35 a share, with $1.7 billion of authorization remaining. That average sits about 15% above the $29.85 October 19, 2026 close, so this year's buybacks have not paid off yet at current prices.
The next catalyst: back-to-back earnings
| Item | $CMG Q3 2026 | $SBUX Q4 FY2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Report date | Oct 28, 2026, ~4:10 p.m. ET | Oct 29, 2026, after the close |
| EPS estimate (FMP) | $0.29 | $0.72 |
| Revenue estimate (FMP) | $3.28 billion | $9.22 billion |
| Year-ago EPS / revenue (FMP) | $0.29 / $3.00 billion | $0.52 / $9.57 billion |
Dates come from Chipotle's announcement and Starbucks investor relations. For Chipotle, the bar is low: the consensus EPS estimate is flat year over year, so watch transactions and any fourth-quarter-to-date comment. For Starbucks, the consensus calls for about 38% EPS growth on lower revenue; its 10-Q attributes the recent revenue decline to converting its China retail operations to a licensed joint-venture model. Starbucks has said it will also give fiscal 2027 guidance. Tracking deal chatter in other sectors? Our piece on Arm and Eliyan takeover interest shows how fast rumor premiums can swing elsewhere.

Bull/Bear Verdict
Bull Case: Chipotle offers a 15.2% trailing operating margin, no funded debt and about 22 times forward earnings at the October 19, 2026 close, and the takeover premium is gone. Starbucks brings 7.9% comparable sales growth, a 2.5% yield and a stock beating the S&P 500 this year.
Bear Case: Chipotle's transactions grew only 1.0% last quarter and the stock is near its 52-week low, with no takeover bid to fall back on. Starbucks trades at about 31 times forward earnings while carrying a $7.67 billion shareholders' deficit, leaving little room for a guidance miss on October 29.
