No Qiagen takeover has been announced or confirmed: as of the October 19, 2026 close there is no bid, no named buyer and no price. What exists is a nine-month trail of reports. The latest came on October 2, 2026, when traders cited an unverified Betaville "uncooked" alert saying at least one possible buyer was in advanced talks to pay a "realistic premium." $QGEN closed at $44.75 that day, up 6.4% from $42.04 at the October 1 close, and finished at $46.55 at the October 19, 2026 close. Traders are paying for a possibility, not a contract.
Qiagen, the molecular testing and sample-preparation company, trades in New York on the NYSE as $QGEN. Below: what has actually been reported, who has been named, and what the math says about the current price.
The Qiagen takeover timeline, report by report
This did not start in October. Qiagen has been publicly in play since January, and the company itself has confirmed a strategic review with advisers. It has never confirmed talks with any named party.
| Date (2026) | What was reported | Qiagen's response | $QGEN closes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jan 20 | Bloomberg (via Reuters): weighing strategic options; talks with several possible buyers, including some US strategic companies | Declined to comment | $47.57 (Jan 16) to $55.45 (Jan 20), +16.6% |
| Mar 2 | CEO Thierry Bernard tells the TD Cowen health-care conference that Qiagen is working with Moelis and Goldman Sachs on a review | On the record | $48.83 (Mar 2) |
| Jul 9 | Bloomberg: early interest from EQT and Advent; KKR also interested; some suitors may consider at least $50 a share | None in the report | $38.00 (Jul 8) to $41.99 (Jul 9), +10.5% |
| Aug 24 | Qiagen names Jonathan M. Pratt CEO from September 1; says its Supervisory Board continues to evaluate opportunities with independent advisers | Company release | $41.78 (Aug 24) |
| Sep 17 | Manager Magazin: TPG and Bain Capital weighing bids; KKR, EQT and Advent also named | No statement | $42.90 (Sep 16) to $44.38 (Sep 17), +3.4% |
| Oct 2 | Betaville alert cited by traders: at least one buyer in advanced talks at a "realistic premium" | No statement found | $42.04 (Oct 1) to $44.75 (Oct 2), +6.4% |
The January story set the tone. Reuters, citing Bloomberg, reported that deliberations were at an early stage and that Bernard's plan to leave once a successor was found removed a key obstacle to a deal. That successor is now in the chair. We covered the October 2 headline when it hit in our first take on the advanced-talks report; this piece adds the full timeline and the price math.
Every wave of reports has lifted the stock, but none has held it near January's peak. The $55.66 close on January 21, 2026 is the highest close of the past twelve months, and the October 19 close sits 16.4% below it.
Who could buy Qiagen?
Five private-equity names have surfaced in reports. Bloomberg reported on July 9, 2026 that EQT and Advent had shown early interest and that KKR had also expressed interest. Manager Magazin added TPG and Bain Capital on September 17, 2026, without naming its sources. None of these firms, and not Qiagen, has confirmed any of it.
The strategic side is murkier. The January report said Qiagen had talked with "some U.S. strategic companies." On October 2, one GuruFocus write-up described the counterparty as a U.S.-listed molecular testing company, but it did not cite a source for that description and no outlet has named a company. Even the Seeking Alpha item that spread the October story wavered: its web address refers to a "strategic buyer," while later versions of the headline say "potential buyer." The honest read: the buyer type is unknown.
That matters for traders. Historically, a strategic acquirer in the same industry draws a longer antitrust review, while a buyout firm's bid depends on debt financing. Each produces a different timeline and a different risk profile for anyone holding the stock into a deal.
What is priced into $QGEN: the premium math
With no offer on the table, the useful exercise is to measure the current price against the reference points a buyer and a seller would argue over.
| Reference point | Price | Oct 19, 2026 close vs. it |
|---|---|---|
| Jan 16, 2026 close (last close before the first report) | $47.57 | -2.1% |
| Jan 21, 2026 close (12-month closing high) | $55.66 | -16.4% |
| Oct 1, 2026 close (day before the latest report) | $42.04 | +10.7% |
| "At least $50" figure in Bloomberg's Jul 9 report | $50.00 | -6.9% |
| FMP consensus analyst target | $43.01 | +8.2% |
| Highest analyst target tracked by FMP | $48.00 | -3.0% |
Reading one: the rumor premium. Versus the October 1 close, the market has added $4.51 a share, or 10.7%. Qiagen had about 206.5 million shares outstanding at June 30, 2026 (206.8 million issued less 0.3 million in treasury, per its second-quarter release), so that is roughly $0.93 billion of added value, and a market value of about $9.61 billion at the October 19, 2026 close.
Reading two: the anchor fight. If a bid landed exactly at the reported $50 floor, it would sit $3.45, or 7.4%, above the October 19 close. Measured from the October 1 close, $50 is an 18.9% premium. Measured from the January 16 close, the last price before any of this, it is only 5.1%. That is the "undisturbed price" problem in a nutshell: a buyer will point to the slump to the low $40s; holders will point to January.
Reading three: analysts are below the tape. FMP's consensus target of $43.01 (range $38.60 to $48) sits under the stock, and only the high end is above it. FMP's summary also shows no new targets logged in the past month, so the consensus may lag the news. Either way, the stock is trading on deal odds more than on standalone valuation.
A sector check keeps this honest. From the October 2 close to the October 19 close, $QGEN gained 4.0%, while the Health Care Select Sector SPDR ($XLV) gained 5.7%, Thermo Fisher ($TMO) 3.8% and Danaher ($DHR) 4.8%. The deal-specific premium is mostly the October 2 jump; since then the stock has moved roughly with its peers. If the talk fades, the October 1 close of $42.04, 9.7% below the October 19 close, is the cleanest marker of what the rumor has been worth, sector drift aside.
What to watch next
- A company statement. Qiagen has confirmed a review, not talks. Any release or SEC 6-K naming a counterparty would be the first hard evidence.
- Third-quarter results, expected November 3, 2026 per FMP's earnings calendar; Qiagen had not posted a date when we checked. In August it reaffirmed a 2026 outlook of about 1% to 2% net sales growth and adjusted diluted EPS of at least $2.43, both at constant exchange rates.
- The November 6, 2026 extraordinary general meeting in Venlo, where shareholders vote on appointing Pratt to the Managing Board.
- The fine print of any bid: price, currency, minimum acceptance threshold and break fees. The 2020 Thermo Fisher deal died on exactly that threshold; our breakdown of Thermo Fisher's failed 2020 Qiagen bid walks through how.
- Volume. 4.56 million shares traded on October 2; 2.16 million on October 19, less than half. A fresh volume spike would be the first sign of new information reaching the tape.
Rumor-driven setups like this one, or the reported Piper Sandler talks that lifted Perella Weinberg, reward patience with sourcing. More of our deal coverage sits in the Analysis section.
Bull/Bear Verdict
Bull Case: Qiagen has confirmed a review with Moelis and Goldman Sachs, five buyout firms have been named in reports, a new CEO is in place, and the only price figure reported, at least $50 a share, sits 7.4% above the $46.55 October 19, 2026 close.
Bear Case: Nine months of reports have produced no bid, the October 2 story rests on unverified chatter, analysts' $43.01 consensus target is below the price, and the stock closed at $42.04 as recently as October 1, 2026.
